Before Towing with a Ford
The first step before you tow anything is to read through your owner’s manual. This provides information regarding your vehicle’s towing capability. Boats, RVs and trailers all have different tow ratings, so you need to ensure your vehicle is up to the task.
To tow with a new Ford vehicle, like the 2021 Ford F-150, it’s recommended that you drive it for a minimum of 1,000 miles before you begin towing. This allows you to break in the vehicle before you add additional strain.
When you place your items in a trailer, make sure you load everything appropriately and distribute the weight. 60% of the cargo should sit in the front portion of your trailer with the other 40% in the rear. Ensure you’ve also secured everything in place.
Check with your manual about what settings to use while towing. For example, many vehicles don’t require that the four-wheel-drive is activated unless you’re traveling on rough, rocky terrain. Otherwise, you simply add more resistance and diminish your fuel economy.
