From the new Ford F-150 pickup to the Ford Expedition SUV, there are plenty of quality vehicles to suit any need. If you plan to tow with your Ford, we have some tips to set you on the right course.

Before Towing with a Ford

The first step before you tow anything is to read through your owner’s manual. This provides information regarding your vehicle’s towing capability. Boats, RVs and trailers all have different tow ratings, so you need to ensure your vehicle is up to the task.

To tow with a new Ford vehicle, like the 2021 Ford F-150, it’s recommended that you drive it for a minimum of 1,000 miles before you begin towing. This allows you to break in the vehicle before you add additional strain.

When you place your items in a trailer, make sure you load everything appropriately and distribute the weight. 60% of the cargo should sit in the front portion of your trailer with the other 40% in the rear. Ensure you’ve also secured everything in place.

Check with your manual about what settings to use while towing. For example, many vehicles don’t require that the four-wheel-drive is activated unless you’re traveling on rough, rocky terrain. Otherwise, you simply add more resistance and diminish your fuel economy.

While Towing with a Ford

As you head down the road, be mindful of the extra space you need while towing. Take your time around turns and account for this extra room.

With the added weight behind you, it’s imperative you also allow for additional time when accelerating or braking.
